In 2018 as the National Trust were looking to take our indoor lambing sheds back in hand, it turned out the building had historical importance being located in one of the only surviving semi circular walled gardens designed by Capability Brown in the country. We maintain a great relationship with the National Trust and decided that we could change our system so housing would not be necessary. It was an opportunity for us to examine our sheep flock and see how we could do things differently. We made the decision to chase a low input system with higher margins rather than output (if you have a FW subscription this article link - FW ARTICLE details how we planned to change well ).
In 2018 we sold all of our Suffolk x North country mules and went about assembling a flock of EasyCare and Exlana Ewes. In the end we were able to source a flock of about half EasyCare and half Exlana. During the next 3 years we bought top Exlana rams to improve the flock as well as a couple of Easycares. In 2022 we joined the Sheep Improvement Group/ Exlana Breeders and after 2 breeding seasons in the group we decided to leave it. We are very committed to good data in sheep and have now decided to continue breeding, searching out the best genetics with the ultimate goal of being able to offer proven genetics for less.
